asics Greenville Track Club-ELITE - a post-collegiate, Olympic-development program
ASICS Greenville Track Club-ELITE's Austin Steagall ran 9:02.89 to place 19th in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase at the Portland Track Festival in Portland, OR on Sunday afternoon. The 2016 NCAA Division II runner-up in that event took the early lead and held in through the first mile in 4:41. His goal was to get a fast time in an attempt to qualify for this month's USATF Championships in Sacramento, CA.
However his early pace may have taken a toll as he faded over the final kilometer. Disappointed, but realistic, he later said, "I now realize that getting the USA qualifying time is a lot tougher than expected. I went for it and was on pace through the first mile, but then I fell off pace quickly. Good to have another shot at a personal best on Friday."
Steagall is scheduled to complete his spring track season at the Stumptown Twilight meet on the same Lewis & Clark College track on Friday, June 16. In his first season with the post-collegiate program Austin has set personal bests for the mile (4:05), 3,000 meters indoors (8:04) and 5,000 meters (13:58).
GTC-ELITE produced four qualifiers for the 2016 USA Olympic Trials Marathon in Los Angeles and is sponsored by ASICS, the 45-year-old Greenville Track Club, Greenville Health System, ScanSource, Joy Real Estate, the Bare Minimum Track Club, generous individual contributors and partnerships with Performance Therapy, Carolina Spine and Rehab, Soleus Running Watches, Boston Bill Sunglasses, Roll Recovery, FinalSurge, The ATI Running Academy, ElliptiGO, NormaTec Recovery Boots and Cocoa Elite recovery products.
