One of the most decorated athletes in the history of Concord University, Jason Weitzel was named to the USTFCCCA All-American Second Team after an 11th-place finish in the steeplechase at the NCAA Division II National Championships. 2021 marks the fourth straight year that Weitzel has been placed on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team. The Athens, West Virginia native completed his course work for his masters of health promotion degree in the spring after earning his Health and Physical education degree during his undergraduate years. In grad school, Weitzel had a 3.54 GPA.
During his career that spans back to the fall of 2015, Weitzel has been a member of USTFCCCA All-Atlantic Region Teams 17 times—including landing on the squad all four years of cross country eligibility—and was All-MEC 16 more times. He helped CU earn its first team bid to the NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championship in 2016, also the first MEC team to accomplish the feat. Furthermore, he helped the Mountain Lions to three consecutive MEC Championships in cross country (2015-17).
In the fall of 2018, Weitzel was the Atlantic Regional Runner of the Year as he was the champion of the Atlantic Cross Country Region Championship. Earlier that spring, Weitzel was the MEC Track Athlete of the Year, and wrapped his career by being the MEC MVP/High Point in track.
After joining the program in August 2021, Jason placed second in Greenville's historic United Community Bank Reedy River Run 10K in his first race with a time of 30:22. He followed that performance with an impressive victory in Richmond's Allianz Partners 8K, running a quick 23:06. In only his third race he set three South Carolina State Records (15K, 10-Mile & 20K) while running 1:14:45 to place 21st in the USATF 2021 Half Marathon Championships in Hardeeville, SC. Jason began 2022 with a victory at the 43rd Greenville News Run Downtown 5K, clocking 14:37--the second fastest time in the event's history.
Jason improved his personal best for an indoor 3,000 meters with a time of 8:06.49 at the USC Invitational in late January. He then placed 25th in his second USATF championship with a 45:48 at Jacksonville, FL's Gate River Run 15K in March. He ran a personal best of 29:22 for a road 10K at the Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston, SC in early April and followed that with a track 5,000-meter PB of 14:05.29 six days later at the Lee Flames Invitational. Jason then placed second in the United Community Bank 44th Reedy River Run 10K in Greenville with a time of 29:47, which was 35 seconds faster than his performance there in September.
In June 2022, Jason improved his track 10,000m PB to 28:59.57 as he placed ninth at the Portland Track Festival. He placed 12th in the 2022 USATF 10K Road Champs at the Cow Harbor 10K in Northport, NY in September. Jason ran his debut 10-mile in an impressive 48:34 to place 27th at the 2022 USATF 10-Mile Championships in Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN in early October.
Jason began 2023 with a runner-up finish in Greenville's Run Downtown 5K with the third fastest time in the 44 year history of the event (14:29). He followed that two weeks later with a win at Columbia, SC's MGC Long Run 15k with a 45:53 performance on a challenging course. He placed second, for the third consecutive year, in the United Community Reedy River Run 10K in April 2023. He also won the 2023 Michelin Memorial 5K in a course record 14:15, besting the previous best by 29 seconds.
As of November 2023, Jason was ranked first in the South Carolina Road Race Rankings after being ranked second from December 2021 through July 2023. He was ranked 3rd in the August 2023 rankings, but regained 2nd in September 2023. In October he ran a personal best of 2:15:55 to qualify for the 2024 USA Olympic Trials Marathon and improved his road 5K personal best to 14:12 in January of 2024 (winning the GTC Run Downtown 5K). He lowered his 5,000m PB to 13:54.88 in April 2024.
Since joining the program Jason has competed in USATF National Road Championship at the following distances: 8K, 10K, 15K, 20K, Half Marathon and Marathon.
