Steagall Wins Governor's Cup Main St. Mile

ASICS Greenville Track Club-ELITE's Austin Steagall returned to Columbia, SC for the second running of the Governor's Cup Main Street Mile on Friday evening. He had placed second by only a second in the 2017 event that is conducted over an out-and-back route along the South Carolina capital city's Main Street. 

After the 180-degree turnaround halfway through the race, Steagall took the lead over a group of mostly Kenyan-born athletes and the defending champion James Dwyer of the Atlanta Track Club. Despite the unusual windy conditions, he maintained his lead and won with a time of 4:15. He was closely followed by Cyrus Korir in 4:16. Kimutai Cheruiyot was third and Peter Koskey placed fourth. Dwyer finished in fifth position. Steagall was awarded the first place prize of $500. He also won the Road Runners Club of America Regional Championship. 

GTC-ELITE was established in 2012 and produced four qualifiers for the 2016 USA Olympic Trials Marathon in Los Angeles.
