asics Greenville Track Club-ELITE - a post-collegiate, Olympic development program
ASICS Greenville Track Club-ELITE's Austin Steagall placed second in the men's 3,000 meters at the UCS Invitational meet in Winston-Salem, NC. After a slow first 1,000-meter split of 2:51, Steagall began to move up through the pack and passed 2K at 5:39. During the final kilometer around the non-banked 200-meter JDL Fast Track, he moved from fifth to second place behind former Naval Academy standout Lucas Stalnaker. Both runners increased their pace over the final 600 meters with Stalnaker holding off Steagall to win with a time of 8:22.31. Steagall's final time was 8:23.3 as he ran the final kilometer in 2:43.
Although the time was well off Steagall's personal best of 8:04, it was a good effort in a tactical race. "Of course we would have liked to have a faster time, but today's race plan was just to be competitive and not worry about the early pace, explained Coach Mike Caldwell. "We thought Austin competed well and put himself in position to win over the final kilometer. Lucas was just too strong today and responded well to Austin's charge over the final 200."
GTC-ELITE was established in 2012 and produced four qualifiers for the 2016 USA Olympic Trials Marathon in Los Angeles. The post-collegiate, Olympic development program is sponsored by ASICS, the 45-year-old Greenville Track Club, Greenville Health System, ScanSource, Joy Real Estate, the Bare Minimum Track Club, generous individual contributors and partnerships with Performance Therapy, Carolina Spine and Rehab, Boston Bill Sunglasses, Roll Recovery products, FinalSurge (on-line training log), The ATI Running Academy, ElliptiGO, NormaTec Recovery Boots and Cocoa Elite recovery products.
