asics Greenville Track Club-ELITE - a post-collegiate, Olympic development program
ASICS Greenville Track Club-ELITE's Austin Steagall closed well to place fourth in the 5,000 meters at the Stumptown Twilight meet conducted in the Portland, OR suburb of Lake Oswego. He covered the final 800 meters in 2:10, including a 62.6 last lap.
Running conservatively due to a lower chest injury that forced him to stop during the 3,000-meter Steeplechase the previous Sunday at the Portland Track Festival on the same Lewis & Clark College track, Steagall ran in the chase pack for most of the race before beginning to move up after 3500 meters. Although he experienced some discomfort in the injured area after 2500 meters, he was able to maintain his effort before his faster last kilometer.
ASICS's Diego Estrada, out of Flagstaff, AZ, won the event with a time of 13:33.
GTC-ELITE was established in 2012 and produced four qualifiers for the 2016 USA Olympic Trials Marathon in Los Angeles. The post-collegiate, Olympic development program is sponsored by ASICS, the 45-year-old Greenville Track Club, Greenville Health System, ScanSource, Joy Real Estate, the Bare Minimum Track Club, generous individual contributors and partnerships with Performance Therapy, Carolina Spine and Rehab, Boston Bill Sunglasses, Roll Recovery products, FinalSurge (on-line training log), The ATI Running Academy, ElliptiGO, NormaTec Recovery Boots, Cocoa Elite recovery products and Synergy Performance (mental performance).
