ASICS Greenville Track Club-ELITE athletes and coaches traveled to nearby Spartanburg, SC to hear marathon legend "Boston Billy" Rodgers speak after his book signing at Spartanburg Day School in conjunction with the Eye Opener cross country event.
Thanks to Spartanburg's Billy Webster the audience was also treated to an introduction by Rodgers' long-time friend George Hirsch. Mr. Hirsch was the founder of "The Runner" magazine and later was publisher of "Runners World" magazine among his many contributions to the sport of distance running. He is also the Chairman of the Board for the New York Road Runners club and was instrumental in founding the New York City Marathon with the late Fred Lebow. Rodgers, who won the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon each four times, was also the honorary starter for the high school races on Saturday morning at the Eye Opener meet on the beautiful Milliken corporate campus. He is the former American record holder in the marathon with a best of 2:09:27 and was a 1976 Olympian. GTC-ELITE is sponsored by ASICS, the 42-year old Greenville Track Club, Performance Therapy, Greenville Health System's North Greenville Hospital, ScanSource, Soleus Running Watches, Boston Bill Sunglasses, The TD Bank Foundation, The Kroc Center, Carolina Spine and Rehab, ElliptiGO, the Bare Minimum Track Club and generous individual contributors.
