On an atypical cooler late August morning for Greenville, SC, Austin Steagall led three of his teammates to a sweep of the first four places at the 11th Annual Edouard Michelin Memorial 5K. Steagall raced over the rolling hills with his teammates before sprinting to the lead just after the 3-mile mark of the 3.1-mile (5K) certified course. His finishing time of 14:44 was only two seconds shy of his "event" record, run on a slightly different route (that included the same hills). It was Steagall's third consecutive victory in this event and the fifth consecutive year an ASICS GTC-ELITE athlete has been the overall winner.

Steagall was closely followed by Eddie Garcia, the former SEC 10,000-meter champion, who was leading at 3 miles. The former Florida Gator ran 14:48 for second. In third place was their new teammate, Victor Pataky, with a time of 15:06 in his first race since relocating to Greenville this month. Zach Mains completed the 1-4 sweep with a time of 15:37.

ASICS Greenville Track Club-ELITE is happy to announce that Joe Niemiec will be joining the post-collegiate, Olympic development program based in Greenville, SC in the near future. Joe is a 2014 graduate of Cedarville University in Ohio, where he majored in Electrical Engineering. He has continued to pursue his running dreams post college and has been coached by his wife, Jasmin. He recently placed 13th at the USATF 25K Championships and also ran 1:06:49 for the Half Marathon in April.

"We look forward to having Joe join our training group," stated Mike Caldwell, the program Director and one of the coaches. "He has definitely progressed the past few years under Jasmin's guidance. However, the opportunity to train with our group should accelerate that progression. While our focus is for him to qualify for the 2020 USATF Olympic Team Marathon Trials in Atlanta, we'll incorporate competition at shorter distances to accomplish such. Our first priority is for him to be healthy so we can establish a consistent training program."

"I am so excited to join ASICS GTC-Elite and pursue my goal of qualifying for the USA Olympic Team Marathon Trials, explains Joe. "I am confident that being around like-minded runners pursuing similar goals and having a coach that is passionate about the sport will allow me to run faster then I ever could on my own. I want to thank both my family and ASICS GTC-ELITE for supporting me in this decision."

Joe and Jasmin have two young children, Elle and Henry,  and plan on relocating to Greenville from their current home in Jackson, Michigan. Joe is currently rehabbing from an upper hamstring injury and looks forward to a quick adaptation to the new training environment.

Ryan Bugler winning NCAA DIII Championship
ASICS Greenville Track Club-ELITE will add Ryan Bugler to the post-collegiate, Olympic development program this month. Bugler is a 2017 graduate of St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota, where he was a two-time NCAA Division III All American in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase. He was the DIII national champion in 2016 and placed 4th in 2017.

Born in San Diego, CA, Bugler graduated from high school in Okinawa, Japan before matriculating at St. John's University where he majored in Sociology and Computer Science.

"Ryan first contacted us about a year ago," explained Director/Coach Mike Caldwell. "But he had employment in New Mexico at the time and decided to continue that while also pursuing his running goals. He managed to improve his steeple time to 8:57.7, but believes he has a lot more potential. We feel that with the opportunity to train with Austin Steagall, who was the Division II runner-up in 2016 and has run 8:50, Ryan will definitely be able to progress in that event. Victor Pataky, who was a DIII championship qualifier in the event, is also a very recent addition to our program. We believe the "power is in the group" and these athletes have the opportunity to develop and utilize that power in both training and competition."

GTC-ELITE was established in 2012 and produced four qualifiers for the 2016 USA Olympic Trials Marathon in Los Angeles.
