![]() Ryan Root has accepted a coaching position at the University of Tulsa and will be leaving ASICS Greenville Track Club-ELITE. The graduate of North Central College in Illinois previously was a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Illinois before joining the post-collegiate, Olympic development program in Greenville, SC in July of 2016. "Ryan's career interest is directed toward coaching and this is a great opportunity for him," stated program director/coach Mike Caldwell. "During Ryan's time with us he improved his performances from 10K to the marathon, despite suffering a brief setback last September with a lower leg injury." Highlights included four runner-up finishes: at the Greenville News Run Downtown 5K in January, at Columbia's MGC Long Run 15K, at the GHS Half-Marathon in Greenville and at the TD Bank Reedy River Run 10K in Greenville. He improved his half-marathon personal best by over two minutes with a time of 1:07:03. He also ran within three seconds of his 5,000 meter personal best on the track with a time of 14:37.32, although not focusing on the shorter distances. He recently completed his season with a 22nd place finish at Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, MN, where he cut over three minutes from his previous performance at that distance, timing 2:23:32. "While we are disappointed that Ryan is moving on, we wish him well and are excited to see him transition into his desired career path of coaching," explained Caldwell. "Ryan definitely was an asset to our program and utilized his skills of pacing to provide a steady influence in many of our workout sessions."

ASICS Greenville Track Club-ELITE's Austin Steagall returned to his hometown of Gaffney, SC and won the Peach Festival 5K for the fifth consecutive year. After completing his outdoor track season with two 3000-meter Steeplechase races in Portland, OR in mid-June, Austin took his scheduled post-season break from running. However, the lure of running in his hometown was too much so he used the race as a "tempo" effort as he begins to regain his fitness.
Steagall ran 15:00 to win easily. The 4:50 per mile pace was well off his course record of 14:37, but a good "fun" effort. It was his sixth victory on the roads and track during 2017. GTC-ELITE was established in 2012 and produced four qualifiers for the 2016 USA Olympic Trials Marathon in Los Angeles. The post-collegiate, Olympic development program is sponsored by ASICS, the 45-year-old Greenville Track Club, Greenville Health System, ScanSource, Joy Real Estate, the Bare Minimum Track Club, generous individual contributors and partnerships with Performance Therapy, Carolina Spine and Rehab, Soleus Running Watches, Boston Bill Sunglasses, Roll Recovery, FinalSurge, The ATI Running Academy, ElliptiGO, NormaTec Recovery Boots and Cocoa Elite recovery products. ASICS Greenville Track Club-ELITE's Kimberly Ruck began the national holiday with a quick trip around the 5-kilometer course on the beautiful Furman University campus to win the women's title in the 7th annual Red, White and Blue Shoes road race. Her time of 16:29 shattered the previous record of 16:58, set by Asheville's Kate Schwartz in 2016. Ruck's time is the fastest women's road 5K time for 2017 in South Carolina.
ASICS GTC-ELITE's Alison Parris traveled to Kernersville, NC for the holiday and competed in the 22nd annual Rotary Club of Kernersville's 4th of July 5K race. Parris placed 5th among a quality field of women runners with a time of 17:23 and earned $100 for her efforts. GTC-ELITE was established in 2012 and produced four qualifiers for the 2016 USA Olympic Trials Marathon in Los Angeles.
