Once again running in the 3000-meter Steeplechase, Steagall improved 12 seconds from last Sunday and ran a personal best of 8:50.58. His previous best was 8:55.46, which was set at the 2016 NCAA DII Championships where he placed second. Running more conservatively than on Sunday, where he led the first four laps, he followed the early leaders and moved from fifth to third over the final two laps. He finished behind former UCLA runner Austin O'Neill's 8:45.69 and second placer Lucas Updike's 8:50.17. This race completed Austin's first season with the post-collegiate program, in which Austin set personal bests for the mile (4:05), 3,000 meters indoors (8:04) and 5,000 meters (13:58) and now the 3000-meter Steeplechase (8:50.58). ASICS Greenville Track Club-ELITE's Austin Steagall ran 9:02.89 to place 19th in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase at the Portland Track Festival in Portland, OR on Sunday afternoon. The 2016 NCAA Division II runner-up in that event took the early lead and held in through the first mile in 4:41. His goal was to get a fast time in an attempt to qualify for this month's USATF Championships in Sacramento, CA.
However his early pace may have taken a toll as he faded over the final kilometer. Disappointed, but realistic, he later said, "I now realize that getting the USA qualifying time is a lot tougher than expected. I went for it and was on pace through the first mile, but then I fell off pace quickly. Good to have another shot at a personal best on Friday." Steagall is scheduled to complete his spring track season at the Stumptown Twilight meet on the same Lewis & Clark College track on Friday, June 16. In his first season with the post-collegiate program Austin has set personal bests for the mile (4:05), 3,000 meters indoors (8:04) and 5,000 meters (13:58). ASICS Greenville Track Club-ELITE's Mark Leininger ran a personal best for 10,000 meters at the Portland Track Festival on Saturday night. The American University graduate cut 12.3 seconds from his previous best with a time of 29:06.16. That placed him 19th in a very good field, led by three-time Olympian and silver (10,000 in 2012) and bronze (marathon '16) medalist Galen Rupp of Portland. Rupp won with a time of 28:18.29.
Leininger covered the first 5,000 in 14:31 and the second half of the race in 14:35. After a crowded initial 400 meters in 72.8 in the field of over 40 athletes Mark averaged 70 seconds for the 25 laps on the Lewis & Clark track. He closed with a 66-second final 400. Eight runners finished between 29:03.9 and 29:09.3. Recent Davidson College (North Carolina) graduate Will Brewster is joining ASICS Greenville Track Club-ELITE to pursue his post-collegiate running career. The former Atlantic 10 Conference champion in the 5,000 (indoor 2016 & '17) and 10,000 meters (2016) graduated with a degree in Biology in May.
Program director/coach Mike Caldwell states, "We are excited to have Will join our group of outstanding athletes. He has excelled at the mid-distances (1500-5,000) since his high school career in Illinois. We believe he will not only become an additional asset to our program, but will benefit from our training philosophy and from running with our current athletes. He has a good range from the 1500 up through the 10,000 and fits in very well with the group." As a "junior" Will placed 10th nationally at the USATF Junior cross country championships and was an alternate for the Team USA Junior (19 & under) squad in 2013. During his collegiate career he was twice an NCAA qualifier at the 5,000-meter distance and placed 24th in the NCAA DI East preliminaries at Lexington, KY in late May. He is the Davidson school record holder at that distance with a time of 14:07.7.
